I am a Kuwaiti national and would not be where I am if it wasn't for the country I cherish. I got my bachelors degree in the USA through a merit scholarship provided for by the government. Not to mention the healthcare, salary, and many other perks provided by Kuwait, I consider myself to be extremely privileged to be given such an opportunity in comparison to many of my American friends, whom had to work for long hours with minimal pay to barely cover their educational costs.
I recall an incident where I fell sick and was taken to the emergency room. After I handed over my medical insurance card to the nurse, she was surprised everything was covered by the government 100%. I will not forget her saying “you are a lucky person to be from Kuwait, I wish my government would do the same.” I was even asked many questions where my answer was all too similar. Who covers your tuition? The government. Where do you get your salary? The government. Who bought your plane ticket to go back home? The government. Did you pay for your books? No, the government did.
Finally after graduating, I was given an opportunity to work in the US which I declined to return to the home I missed. It was only right to stop taking and start giving back to Kuwait.
After returning home, I used my Finance degree to launch my career in the banking industry working for a local bank. One of the ways I give back is by promoting my country as a business hub to attract foreign direct investment. The funding is used for projects to build the country's infrastructure as well as invest in the Kuwait Stock Exchange. I used my second degree in Management Information Systems to start a company with my siblings (http://www.dirbiz.com). We wanted to offer a unique service that people could benefit from. The concept behind the website is an interactive global business directory, where businesses could have their own profile, with maps, photos, videos, and much more.
Even though I still have a long road ahead of me, I owe it to Kuwait for making me who I am. Throughout my life I have seen my country give its' citizens everything they need. It is time for us to return the favor by working for a better Kuwait. By giving back, we can let the future generations have a shot at a good education, which will benefit their life and Kuwait as well.
